LAS VEGAS — Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn may have won Mountain West Player of the Week for what he did in two games.

But the Boise performance is what people will remember.

The Rebels trailed by 23 inside ExtraMile Arena. The Broncos were in rhythm. The building had flipped. For most teams, that’s where it gets away from you.

Gibbs-Lawhorn didn’t let it.

Gibbs-Lawhorn finished with a career-high 36 points in the Rebels’ 86-83 overtime win. Twenty-five came in the second half. From the 11:25 mark to the end of regulation, he outscored Boise State 22-19 by himself.

With 38 seconds left, he stepped into a three to tie the game. He never came off the floor. Forty-five minutes. Every possession.

Two nights earlier against San Jose State, he played all 40 minutes and scored 24 points in an 82-75 win. Five assists. Three steals. No breaks.

For the week, Gibbs-Lawhorn averaged 30.0 points, shooting 23-of-41 from the field and 10-of-20 from three.

The award reflects the week. The game log shows the trend.

Over his last four games, he’s scored 28, 29, 24, and 36. He’s 17-of-34 from three in that stretch. At Fresno State, Gibbs-Lawhorn went 10-of-13. At UNR, he went 10-of-17. His shooting efficiency has held as the volume has climbed.

Since January 20th at Utah State, he’s posted 21, 27, 8, 26, 28, 29, 24 and 36. That’s seven 20-point games in the last eight outings.

Early in the season, the production fluctuated. There were 10-point nights. An 8 against New Mexico. Thirteen at Colorado State.

That stretch feels distant now.

Dra has turned into someone UNLV cannot take off the floor.

He played:

40 minutes against GCU.

40 against San Jose State.

45 at Boise.

45 in the January overtime win against Boise.

He’s on the floor. And late, it runs through him. His 36 points were the most by a Rebel since Bryce Hamilton’s 42 at Colorado State in 2022.

More than the award, the recent stretch clarifies something for UNLV.

When the game narrows, the decision isn’t complicated.

The ball finds Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn.

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
