Rebels Shut Out in Tournament Opener as Minnesota Rolls 10-0

Minnesota jumped on UNLV starter Carson Lane from the first inning and never looked back, handing the Rebels a 10-0 shutout Friday night at U.S. Bank Stadium to open the Cambria Classic. UNLV drops to 10-5. The Gophers improve to 10-3.

Lane lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up nine hits, eight earned runs and four walks on 97 pitches. The third inning did him in for good. Ty Allen put the game out of reach with a three-run homer to left that made it 6-0, and Jack Spanier followed with a two-run double later in the frame to push it to 8-0. Five runs, five hits, one inning. That was the ballgame.

On the other side, Cole Selvig was untouchable. The Minnesota righty threw five shutout innings, striking out seven and walking nobody while allowing just two hits. UNLV managed four hits total on the night and never had a runner reach third base. Selvig improves to 3-0 on the season and it was easy to see why.

The Rebels had moments where something looked possible and then didn't. Gunnar Myro singled in the sixth and Marcos Rosales reached on a hit by pitch with two on, but Drew Barragan flew out to end the threat. In the seventh, Nin Burns II doubled to center and advanced to third on a wild pitch with two outs, but Nicky Garritano struck out looking to strand him there.

That was about as close as UNLV got.

There is not much to salvage from a game like this. The offense was flat, the starting pitcher got hit hard and the Gophers are a good team playing at home. Sometimes it goes that way. The Rebels will need a short memory and a better outing from whoever takes the ball next.
