Go Lopes Radio Q&A: Breaking Down UNLV’s Heartbreak, Josh Pastner’s First Year and Grand Canyon

I joined Go Lopes Radio this week to talk through where UNLV basketball stands after Tuesday night’s heartbreaking loss at Fresno State and what comes next for the Rebels under Josh Pastner.

The conversation started with the final sequence in Fresno, including Jake Heidbreder’s baseline jumper at the buzzer and how UNLV allowed a five-point lead to disappear in the final seconds of a 98-96 loss. We also discussed what that ending revealed about a team that has now lost four straight after previously sitting 5-2 in Mountain West play.

From there, we took a broader look at Pastner’s first season in Las Vegas and what should realistically be expected from Year One of the rebuild. The results have been inconsistent, but the larger evaluation involves roster construction, development and whether Pastner can establish something sustainable beyond individual wins and losses.

We also spent time on Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn and the offensive responsibility he has taken on. His efficiency and scoring have become increasingly important as UNLV has leaned on him as both its primary creator and point guard. The question moving forward is how high that offensive ceiling can go and how the Rebels can build enough structure around him that he does not have to solve every possession himself.

Tyrin Jones’ status was another important part of the conversation. His absence has affected more than UNLV’s frontcourt depth. Jones provides rim protection, rebounding and defensive flexibility, and the Rebels have looked considerably different structurally without him available.

The discussion then turned toward Saturday’s matchup with Grand Canyon and what UNLV will have to control if it wants to pull the upset. The Rebels cannot afford another game dictated by turnovers, unfinished defensive possessions or stretches where the offense loses organization. Against a team capable of punishing those mistakes, UNLV will have to defend the glass, protect the basketball and turn its opportunities around the rim into actual points.
