Scouting Report

Washenitz is a point guard who can speed the game up without losing her defensive edge. Her college career has already put her in the ACC and Big 12, and the recurring trait has been pressure: she gets into the ball, jumps at opportunities to turn defense into transition and rebounds well enough for a 5-foot-7 guard to start the break herself. She averaged 2.3 assists per game last season, but UNLV does not need her to chase assist totals. The bigger job is to get the first side organized, keep Kinnebrew from having to bring the ball up every possession and make sure Roland gets touches before the defense can front the post. Washenitz has not been an elite percentage shooter, so teams will test her by going under actions and shrinking the lane. That puts more importance on pace, paint touches and quick decisions. When she plays north-south and gets off the ball before the second defender settles, the lineup makes sense. Defensively, she can set the tone by making opposing point guards work before they ever reach the first action.
