LAS VEGAS — The Mountain West’s rebuilt membership takes effect Wednesday, with the conference now headquartered in Las Vegas.
The conference’s realignment changeover takes effect July 1. Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State have left for the rebuilt Pac-12. UTEP, North Dakota State and Northern Illinois are joining the league’s football lineup, while the Mountain West has moved its conference office from Colorado Springs to Las Vegas.
The Mountain West’s football membership now includes UNLV, Air Force, Hawaii, New Mexico, Reno, San Jose State, Wyoming, UTEP, North Dakota State and Northern Illinois. North Dakota State is joining as a football-only member, while Northern Illinois will compete in football and gymnastics.
Grand Canyon and UC Davis are joining in non-football sports. Utah Tech is joining for baseball and men’s swimming and diving.
The Rebels stayed in the Mountain West while several of the conference’s most recognizable football brands moved on. Now the league’s headquarters are in Las Vegas, its basketball tournaments are already in Las Vegas, and its football championship game has been played at Allegiant Stadium.
UNLV athletic director Erick Harper told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in May that the conference office being in Las Vegas could help the city host more Mountain West championship events.
“Their office being here also provides an opportunity for the city of Las Vegas to host some Mountain West conference championships,” Harper said.
“We could have all the championships coming through here and lock in the football championship game at Allegiant Stadium.
“I think it would be spectacular to be able to host more Mountain West championship competition here in Las Vegas.”
The Mountain West lost Boise State, Fresno State and San Diego State, three programs that helped define the league’s football identity. It also lost Colorado State and Utah State. The conference now has to rebuild its profile with a different group of members, a Las Vegas headquarters and a football race that no longer runs through the same familiar programs.
The Rebels signed an extension in 2024 to remain in the Mountain West from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2032. The agreement included additional revenue for the university and language allowing UNLV to leave without penalty if it receives an invitation from an autonomous Power Four conference.
Harper later explained the school’s thinking in a UNLV Q&A, noting that the Pac-12 name still carried history but that realignment had changed what the league actually was.
“It’s the same logo,” Harper said, “but … it’s not the same conference.”
His larger point was that UNLV could not build its future by assuming realignment was finished.
“We simply have to continue being the best possible UNLV,” Harper said.
The financial side of the Mountain West’s reset remains unsettled. The Pac-12 and Mountain West have been involved in litigation over poaching and exit fees tied to the departing schools.
The Review-Journal reported that the total fees had grown to more than $155 million before the two sides agreed in May to pause their lawsuits and work toward a settlement. A settlement was agreed to in principle June 1, with a show cause hearing scheduled for Sept. 9.
UNLV’s agreement to remain in the Mountain West included a promised $14.9 million payment by July 1 and another $21 million tied to poaching and exit fees, for a total of $35.9 million. It remains unclear how much will ultimately be paid as part of the settlement between the two conferences.
On the field, the reset comes as UNLV has more momentum than it has had for most of its Mountain West history.
The Rebels have posted three straight winning seasons and played in back-to-back Mountain West championship games. They now enter the new version of the league with Dan Mullen as head coach, Jackson Arnold at quarterback and a roster expected to compete near the top of the conference.
That does not make UNLV the default favorite. North Dakota State brings a proven football brand into the league. Hawaii, New Mexico, Air Force, San Jose State, Wyoming, UTEP, Reno and Northern Illinois all enter a conference without the same established order.
